Chenodeoxycholic acid is a primary bile acid, which is mainly produced by Bellingbiothrough extraction from poultry bile (chicken) and synthesis from cholic acid as well. And it is also used as the starting material for the production of Ursodeoxycholic acid.

The main function of chenodeoxycholic acid is to reduce the saturation of cholesterol in bile, so as to make the cholesterol in stones dissolve and fall off. High dose of CDCA (10 ~ 15 mg/kg daily) can inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol and increase the secretion of bile in patients with cholelithiasis, but the secretion of bile salts and phospholipids remains unchanged.
